June 8 – National Raspberry Day

What is summer without the luscious taste of raspberries? These little berries are perfect for breakfast in your yogurt, for lunch as an upgrade for a usual peanut butter and jam sandwich, and for dinner in a special sauce or salad. And of course there are so many ways raspberries can elevate dessert! Raspberries can even make an outing with friends so much better, as you’ll see in today’s book. So while these favorite treats are in season, plan a trip to a farmers market or a pick-your-own field for a berry fun day!

Just for Today (A Maybe Tomorrow Book)

As soon as Norris sees Elba, he can tell that she’s been up all night worrying. He offers to talk about it with her, but she declines. Norris tries another tack, telling Elba “‘sometimes worry is when you tell yourself the wrong story'” and suggesting that “‘just for today'” she tries telling herself “‘a different story.'” Elba is game to try. To start off, Norris decides on a happy ending to aim for then prompts a story with Elba’s help about two good friends who sail off on their boat.

Elba is excited to hear they have a boat, which inspires Norris to actually build a boat with wood and nails he has lying around. Elba helps, and soon they have the Adventure to float down the river to have a picnic. On shore, Norris unpacks their basket to find lots of goodies. . . but no Elba? Where could she be? Norris was “having too many thoughts. All those thoughts were turning into worries!”

Suddenly, Elba finds herself sailing off with the current and then, with a bump, she’s in the water. Realizing Norris can’t hear her cries for help, she finds her way to shore and clambers onto dry land. There, in front of her, is a raspberry thicket full of luscious fruit—her and Norris’s favorite! She nibbles a red raspberry while singing a comforting song to herself then sets off up the riverbank to find her friend. When she’s greeted by one of the butterflies that always hovers around Norris, Elba knows she is on the right path.

Norris, meanwhile, is full of worries that only grow as he tries not to worry. But then, he hears a voice he recognizes, and soon Elba appears. She’s surprised to learn that Norris was worried and that “everyone worries sometimes.” Elba pulls Norris along to see the raspberries she found, as they talk about how their worries actually helped them. They list the things they’ve lost as well as the things they haven’t and celebrate the raspberries they can have for lunch. They finish the story they were telling—short and sweet and all about their friendship—and it will always be their favorite.

Charlotte Agell’s Just for Today, the second book in her Maybe Tomorrow series brings best friends Elba and Norris back together to reassure young readers when they feel worried or overwhelmed. Through her gentle storytelling, Agell lets children know that they are not alone in experiencing the physical jitters and swirling thoughts that can feel paralyzing while giving them a concrete way to reframe the ideas in their mind. Her advice to concentrate on “just today” or simply a task at hand helps kids manage their emotions which fosters self-confidence. This lesson is clearly demonstrated through Elba and Norris’s close friendship, Elba’s uplifting internal dialogue, and the way Elba counters Norris’s regrets on losing their boat and food with positive aspects of the day.

Ana Ramírez González’s vibrant mixed-media illustrations engage readers with lovely landscapes and sweetly drawn depictions of Elba and Norris together. Norris and Elba’s changing emotions are evident and realistic, subtly moving between worry, fear, happiness, and contentment and giving children and adults a range of feelings to talk about.

Comforting and affirming, Just for Today is a balm for the worries and uncertainties of daily life and a book that children and adults will love to share.

June 22 – International Being You Day

Sometimes people find it hard to show their true, even quirky parts of themselves when they’re trying to live up to expectations or fit in with a certain crowd. International Being You Day invites everyone to disregard these pressures and celebrate their individuality. The holiday encourages self-acceptance, and the courage to acknowledge and show your real personality, whether that’s flashy or quiet; take part in activities that speak to you, not just the group; and to believe in your own skills and knowledge—to be confident and authentic. Today’s book puts a humorous and ultimately sweetly poignant spin on the holiday.

The Mystery of the Lost Cape (The Terrible Trio #3)

Our intrepid friends Zeb the zebra, Marge the penguin, and Barry the lemur have settled into their roles as the most unlikely of superheroes as Zeb’s power is blending in with a crosswalk, Marge can make mac ‘n’ cheese from anything, and Barry has very nice handwriting. It’s tidying up day at their official lair—the Superheroes Café—and Zeb suggests sorting out the dress-up box. Only, it’s not a dress-up box, it’s the Lost-and-Found box, and Barry’s scandalized that Zeb and Marge want to play with other animals’ belongings.

As Barry begins matching items with their possible owners, he finds a polka-dotted cape and just has to try it on. As soon as he ties it around his neck, he begins flying! Barry wants to try it out, but he’s conflicted. If he just borrows it, though, just to see what it’s like to be a real superhero, that would be okay, right? He dons a pair of goggles and soon he’s flying over the city. In no time he helps apprehend a wolf gang of bank robbers.

The “Masked Crusader” is all over the news, and Marge and Zeb can’t stop buzzing about him. They aren’t the only ones obsessed. Barry, himself, can’t seem to let go of his new alter-ego. He takes on just one more mission, then another and another and . . . When Barry finally comes back to the café, Zeb discovers the cape and remembers that Emu is offering a $50,000 reward for its return. He calls—only too late remembering that Emu has two superpowers—flying and butt kicking. Each of our intrepid heroes are afraid of getting their booty kicked, and they skirmish over who should hand over the cape and . . . Riiiiippp!

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Minky Stapleton. Text copyright © 2026 by Swapna Haddow. Courtesy of Scholastic.

After Zeb fails to fool Emu with a similar-looking tablecloth, Barry takes the rap. But before he gets his butt kicked, he tells Emu that he only used the cape to become a real superhero like her. Suddenly, Emu breaks down, admitting that she’s only a flying—and butt-kicking—superhero because of the cape. The three are surprised, reminding her that she “almost kicked Barry’s butt a moment ago” without wearing her cape and reassuring her that their butts were all terrified and are “still a bit frightened.” Emu takes their words to heart (and to her booty-kicking feet). She leaves happy and more confident than ever. The whole experience has given Barry a new idea—one that will make use of his true superpower, help their superhero community, and add another offering to the Superhero Café.

In this this third—and final—book in her The Terrible Trio series, Swapna Haddow follows up The Not So Superheroes and The Day the Mac ‘n’ Cheese Ran Out with the equally charming and hilarious The Mystery of the Lost Cape. Haddow’s signature silliness is magnified with clever misdirection and comical cluelessness, and Zeb’s retelling of how the cape got torn is laugh-out-loud funny. Layered with witty running-gag subplots and character arcs, the story pulls them all together in a heartening and satisfying ending.

Loaded with rollicking action and evocative facial expressions as well as favorite comedy and mystery tropes, Minky Stapleton’s incredibly detailed illustrations immerse readers in this world where laughter is their superpower. Stapleton exuberant interactions among these lovable characters will keep readers riveted to this fast-paced story. Her dynamic, easy-to-read text mimics the characters’ quirky dialogue, highlighting emotions through size and special effects.

A joy to read and a winning finish to this standout series, The Mystery of the Lost Cape: The Terrible Trio #3 is a must for graphic novel fan as well as for any library or home collection. This series would make a wonderful gift to start off summer reading or for any occasion.

June 12 – National Pet Appreciation Week

Pets give us so much love and joy that we often want to do something special for our furry friends in return. The first full week of June gives us the opportunity to show our pets how much we appreciate them! Why not spend a little extra time walking or cuddling with your pet? This week is a great time to pamper them with a few extra treat or a new toy. Another way to show how much our pets mean to us is to make sure they’re up-to-date on their annual check-ups and vaccinations. However you celebrate, you know your pet will appreciate it!

A Wickedly Evil Pet: A Branches Book (Super Villains in Training #2)

Vicky von Evil loves going to school at SVT—Super Villains in Training—even though the work may be harder for her than for most of the students. You see, her “parents and little brother, Henry, aren’t wicked at all.” Still, they support her because her “extended family is full of baddies!” In fact, her Granny Dina-mite has come for a visit to give Vicky some tips on becoming evil.

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Estrela Lourenço. Text copyright © 2026 by Kailei Pew. Courtesy of Scholastic.

One reason Vicky loves SVT is her teacher. Today, Miss Chiff announces that for the next week her students will be practicing on STV’s Crooked Course to learn new evil skills. On Friday each student will be graded on how well they show accuracy and speed in overcoming four obstacles. Those who finish within 30 minutes will be awarded a villain medal of chaos. Miss Chiff also says that they can bring a villain pet as a sidekick. Vicky wants to earn a medal, but without any special powers or a pet she knows it’s going to be tough.

Granny takes Vicky to Purely Evil Pet Rescue. Vicky meets all the different animals, but none of them feel right for her. That is until she sees the very last pet—a bunny. Vicky feels an immediate spark and can see in his adorable eyes that he has “villain potential.” She names him Captain von Evil and can’t wait to show her class. Instead of being awed, though, the students just laugh.

When it comes time to practice on the Crooked Course, Vicky expects to show Captain the ropes, but as soon as they begin, Captain is way ahead of her. He swings! He tunnels! He jumps! He even scurries through the mud pit while Vicky gets hopelessly stuck. Everyone loves Captain and gives Vicky no notice. She feels deflated. How is her “new pet already a better villain” than she is?

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Estrela Lourenço. Text copyright © 2026 by Kailei Pew. Courtesy of Scholastic.

After more dismal results, Vicky is ready to take Captain back to the Pet Rescue. On the way there, however, she thinks about Granny’s advice to really watch what Captain is doing while they practice, and when her bike gets caught in a mud puddle and she sees Captain digging her out, she has a revelation. Now Vicky’s excited for Friday’s competition. But will her new strategy earn her a medal of chaos and prove that she is a true villain?

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Estrela Lourenço. Text copyright © 2026 by Kailei Pew. Courtesy of Scholastic.

Kailei Pew’s second book in her Super Villains in Training early chapter book series offers young readers fast-paced and hilarious action as Vicky tries to live up to her family’s talent for evil despite having no special powers and parents and a brother who are kind, always upbeat, and sweet. Pew’s story is delightfully relatable for readers navigating early elementary school grades, and her themes of friendship, family support, trusting others, self-confidence, and cooperation are smoothly woven throughout her appealing storytelling.

From the SVT campus to the pet shop to the obstacle course, young readers will love accompanying Vicky through Estrela Lourenço’s expressive and detailed illustrations. Lourenço brings out all of the humor in Pew’s story while also eliciting empathy from readers as Vicky struggles to prove herself. Emerging and newly independent readers will appreciate the bold text and dialogue enclosed in speech bubbles that are clearly linked to the speaker. Lourenço’s vivid snapshots and full-page images add to the depth of the Super Villains in Training series.

With a well-developed and enticing story, appealing characters, humor, and a high-interest setting, A Wickedly Evil Pet (Super Villains in Training #2) is a must for any fan of the series. Children new to the series will want to catch up with the first book: The Fantastic Freeze Ray before Project Slime, book #3 comes along in November.

February 19 – Skate Shop Day

About the Holiday

Today’s holiday rolled onto the calendar in 2020, sparked by Chris Nieratko, a skate journalist and shop owner, and Scotty Coats, whose career was in music. They wanted to help skate shop owners survive the winter downturn in sales. Inspired by Record Store Day, which takes place on the third Saturday in April each year, the pair designed the holiday to draw attention to skate shops. They invited skateboarding brands to create unique decks, wheels, and shirts that could only be found in local shops to sell on that day. Skate shops aren’t just places to find gear, though. They’re warm, welcoming spaces where friendships are made over shared stories and tricks, local shopkeepers are supported, and community built. To celebrate today, visit your local skate shop, gear up for warmer weather, and feel the love!

Thank you to Scholastic for sharing a digital copy of this book with me for review!

Selena the Sunflower Dragon (Dragon Girls #19)

By Maddy Mara

One sunny day while Selena and her friends Charlotte and Layla were at the skate park, Selena noticed a patch of beautiful sunflowers growing nearby even though it was winter. She then smelled a fragrant aroma of flowers all around her and heard a faint sound of singing: “Magic Forest, Magic Forest, come explore . . . .” She paid little attention as she was excited to begin skating. As she sped through the half-pipe, though, she didn’t change direction at the top but was magically transported to a forest full of flowers. The silent air smelled like warm hot chocolate. And Selena herself had become a Dragon Girl with powerful yellow wings and sharp talons!

Courtesy of Scholastic © 2026.

Selena had hardly taken this in when she met a beautiful bug named Dottie who told her that she was Selena’s Questie and would be helping Selena on her quest. Dottie also revealed Selena had transformed into a Sunflower Dragon Girl. Dottie led Selena to the garden of the Tree Queen. Here, Selena discovered that Charlotte had become a Rose Dragon and Layla a Water Lily Dragon.

Courtesy of Scholastic © 2026.

The Tree Queen revealed that the Fury Queen was using Pufferbugs to put everything in the Magic Forest to sleep with her chocolate-scented potion so that she could take over. The Flower Dragons are the forest’s only hope, the Tree Queen said. To break the Fury Queen’s spell, the Dragon Girls must find the right wake-up scent, a special liquid to dissolve it in, and a bottle to hold the potion.

Courtesy of Scholastic © 2026.

The Tree Queen pointed them in the right direction, and when Selena, Layla, and Charlotte discovered that they could skate the air currents, allowing them to fly at top speed, they were off on an adventure! They met Fearcats, restored pollen-making power to moonflowers, and flew into a thunderstorm all while dodging Pufferbugs and finding creative ways to use their skateboarding skills and their friendship to make the perfect potion. But can the three best friends stay awake long enough to save the forest?

A sneak peek at Dragon Girls: Charlotte the Rose Dragon, #20 in the Dragon Girls series follows the story.

A new Dragon Girls book by Maddy Mara is always highly anticipated, and their latest story rewards the wait with the series’ signature combination of magical adventures, friendship, humor, and girl power that makes the series so popular. Lightly illustrated, the story invites readers to imagine the details of the Magic Forest and its inhabitants as well as Selena’s, Charlotte’s, and Layla’s transformations as dragons. Needing to solve problems to complete their mission, the three friends also model positive cooperation and critical-thinking skills. Of course, it’s all wrapped in the fun, fast-paced storytelling that delights fans and keeps them wanting more.

February 16 – National Bake for Family Fun Month

About the Holiday

Whether the weather is cold or whether the weather is warm, the weather is always perfect for the cozy goodness of baking sweet treats or savory dishes with family and friends! Baking cookies—or the perennial favorite mac ‘n’ cheese—together is a fun way to teach cooking skills and a little math while also having meaningful one-on-one time with your kids. Of course, one of the best parts about baking together is eating the delicious meals or treats afterward!

The Day the Mac ‘n’ Cheese Ran Out (The Terrible Trio #2)

Written by Swapna Haddow | Illustrated by Minky Stapelton

When we last left our intrepid superheroes, they had found jobs at the Superheroes Café and finally embraced their slightly embarrassing but unexpectedly useful superpowers. Zeb the zebra discovered that his power to blend in with a crosswalk was applicable in at least one other place, Barry the lemur wrote enticing menu signs, and Margarine the penguin was whipping up mac ‘n’ cheese everywhere and from everything like a caped tornado. They were on top of the world! They were heroes!

Illustration © 2026 by Minky Stapleton. Text © 2026 by Swapna Haddow. Courtesy of Scholastic.

But that was then and this is today, when Zeb came to work only to find a huge crowd outside the Superheroes Café and the doors locked. When Zeb got inside, he was met with a terrible, confusing scene: Marge was crying a waterfall and revealed “ILOSTMYPOWERICANTMAKEMACNCHEESEANYMORE!” Barry supplied the translation. This was BAAAD news! How bad? After causing a very hungry lion to stub his toe, Zeb saved his own skin by promising him an endless supply of mac ‘n’ cheese for his cub’s birthday party. If Marge can’t make mac ‘n’ cheese, they’ll all be eaten.

Illustration © 2026 by Minky Stapleton. Text © 2026 by Swapna Haddow. Courtesy of Scholastic.

Thus begins the madcap search for an antidote to restore Marge’s power.  She tries cooking her own mac ‘n’ cheese from scratch, tasting different cheeses down at the farmers market, and joining a meditation circle at the Mountain Goat Meditation Center, but nothing works. Zeb even gives him an apology card and hypnotizes him, but these things don’t satisfy the lion either, and now he’s so hangry that he ties a garlic-marinated Zeb to a grilling rack and heads for the barbecue. It’s at this very moment (well, soonish, anyway, after some mind-bending, dream memories; the revelation of Margarine’s sister’s name, and a heartfelt declaration of friendship) that the answer to Marge’s lost power becomes clear. But will Marge’s power stir to life? Will Zeb be cooked? Will Barry see the writing on the wall? There’s only one way to find out!

Illustration © 2026 by Minky Stapleton. Text © 2026 by Swapna Haddow. Courtesy of Scholastic.

Swapna Haddow’s second book in her Terrible Trio graphic novel series charms with feel-good silliness that will have kids cackling at the clueless goofiness that makes these best friends so endearing. Zeb’s clever use of his power, which starts the plot rolling, is ingenious. Gentle pokes at a few current trends will also bring giggles. Haddow’s quick-witted dialogue keeps independent readers riveted to the story and also making this series a rollicking read aloud for younger children.

Minky Stapleton’s hilarious illustrations of Marge, Zeb, Barry, and the lion who needs his mac ‘n’ cheese NOW! show off Haddow’s characters at their bewildered, bothered, and bewitched best. The fun she has with each of the characters as they swing from shell-shocked to weeping to drifting into zany asides radiates from the page, making this story a laugh-out-loud gem. The lion’s super-roar power, depicted in all-caps, is especially funny as he fluctuates between the hangries and affability with no moderation in tone.

This smart, comedic The Terrible Trio series, powered by #1: The (Not So) Superheroes, #2: The Day the Mac ‘n’ Cheese Ran Out, and the upcoming #3: The Mystery of the Lost Cape, will excite any young reader or graphic novel fan. With plenty of repeat readability, the books make an exciting gift and will enjoy super-standing on library and home bookshelves.

Cuddle Chick Craft

Like the little chick in today’s book, kids love to cuddle! With this craft, kids can made a cute chick cuddle buddy for playtime, story time, or bedtime! Kids can personalize their chick as to size, color, fabric, and facial expression and whether it has a comb or feathers. Just remember—while all chicks are different, they all love a hug!

Supplies

  • Fleece, gingham, or other fabric for the body large enough for the back and front. The size of fabric depends on the size of the chick to be made.
  • Fleece or other fabric for a comb; feathers for a fluffy top.
  • Small piece of fleece or other material for wings
  • Small scraps of fleece or other material for the eyes and beak. Kids can have fun trying different eyes to make facial expressions and may enjoy attaching velcro to the body and backs of eyes to be able to change them.
  • Poly Fill
  • Thread and sewing needle OR hot glue
  • Scissors

Directions

To Make the Body

  1. Cut two circles from the fabric in your choice of size. (I used a pot lid to outline my circles)
  2. If sewing, place the right sides of the fabric together and sew around the edges, leaving two or three inches open. If using hot glue, glue around the edges of the right side of fabric of each circle and put together, leaving two or three inches open.
  3. Turn the fabric inside out
  4. Stuff with poly fill

To Add the Comb

  1. Cut a piece of fleece or other fabric 2 or 3 inches wide as your buddy and about 6 inches long
  2. Fold the fleece lengthwise
  3. Insert both ends of the fleece into the opening at the top of the body
  4. Sew or glue the opening shut, securing the comb
  5. Cut strips about ¼-inch wide from the top of the fabric to close to the body

To Add Feathers

  1. Gather feathers and place them into the opening at the top of the body
  2. Glue or sew them in place

To Make Wings

  1. Cut 2 teardrop-shaped pieces of fabric to pit the body
  2. Sew or glue them to each side of the buddy, folding them around the side so half shows on the front and the back

To Make the Face

  1. Cut eyes and beak from fabric
  2. Sew or glue the face to the buddy
