Charlotte the Rose Dragon (Dragon Girls #20)

During their day together, Charlotte and her auntie Bella were viewing the rose bushes in the public greenhouse at the park where she, Selina, and Layla met to skateboard most days. Charlotte loved roses for their beauty and toughness that mirrored herself. She thought wistfully of her last adventure with her friends in the Magic Forest, hoping that they would have another one soon. She didn’t have to wait long! While wandering in the greenhouse, she smelled a familiar scent and heard a familiar melody. In a moment she found herself transported to the Magic Forest once more.

Charlotte was met by Hummi, a hummingbird, who told Charlotte that Fury Bugs had invaded the forest. Their bite made all the creatures argue about anything and everything. As Hummi led Charlotte to the glade, she saw that Selina and Layla were already waiting for her. Soon, Charlotte, Selina, and Layla were meeting with the Tree Queen, who revealed that the Fury Queen was trying to take over the forest by distracting its inhabitants with useless squabbles. The Dragon Girls have been summoned to stop her with a powerful perfume. But how? First, they must enter the Secret Dragon Garden to discover that themselves.

Once inside the garden, the Dragon Girls learn that the Fury Bugs are already there. Although they try to avoid them, they can’t help but get bitten. They find themselves snapping at each other and saying things they don’t mean. They decide they must split up to protect their friendship and solve this quest. But working separately can the Dragon Girls overcome their adversary’s obstacles and save the Magic Forest? The journey to answering to this question will leave readers spellbound as they reunite with these three enchanting heroes.

Full of ingenuity and built on true friendship, the latest adventure of the Flower Dragons will mesmerize readers with its quick pace, relevant storyline, and clever thinking. The Dragon Girls overarching themes of tight relationships, trust in each other, and ever-present support are on especially strong display in this story as Charlotte, Selina, and Layla struggle with but overcome the effects of the Fury Bugs’ bites. Sprinkled with humor, promoting independence and self-esteem, and embracing family, Maddy Mara’s Charlotte the Rose Dragon is a smart addition to this three-book series.

Alessandro D’Urso’s splash of charcoal-colored illustrations add atmosphere and personality to the chapters.

July 31 – Shark Week

To the sorrow of many, Shark Week is coming to a fin-ish, but it’s never too late to indulge your love of these awesome marine animals! These denizens of the deep, and especially the Great White, are endlessly fascinating. Their toothy power, instantly recognizable fin, and the lore which has grown up around them, make them fearsome and awesome subjects for study and stories any time of the year. Today’s book—the first in an exciting new series—will satisfy all shark and adventure fans!

Thanks to Scholastic for sending me a copy of this book for review!

Max Beast: Sharknado Warning

As Max manned the boat while his parents explored the wreckage of a superyacht that recently sank, he suddenly found himself fighting for survival against a massive shark that charged their boat, sending Max into the churning sea. Just before he went under, though, Max caught a glimpse of an unusual marking on the shark’s belly. Where had he seen that image before? There was no time to think about that, however, as the massive beast was about to attack. Max braced himself. But instead of rushing at him, the shark began thrashing, and Max could see that the strange marking was an infinity symbol.

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Khadijah Khatib. Text copyright © 2026 by Maddy Mara. Published by Scholastic, 2026.

It began pulsing red then ripped itself from the shark’s chest. The silver pendant floated in the water for a moment, and Max realized he’d seen this charm around the neck of a teenager, Hector, who’d barged in front of him and his parents in the dive shop where they’d gotten their snorkeling equipment. Suddenly, it “flew through the water toward Max like a magnet to metal” and “sank into Max’s skin.” Then things really started to happen. As the shark began losing its fearsome features and sprouting arms, legs, and a shock of hair Max recognized as Hector’s, Max was undergoing the opposite transition. In a moment, he was longer, stronger, had hundreds of teeth, sharper vision, and a fin and tail.

This transformation changes everything, and even thought Max and Hector don’t like or trust each other, they’re linked—not only because they’re both trying to locate the superyacht (Hector to loot it, and Max to stop him and find his parents) but because they can read each other’s thoughts. This ability comes in handy as they battle Hector’s cohorts and their spearguns, a giant squid, a dive cage, and other explosive underwater menaces as well as time, itself. Will Max achieve his aims and become a boy again, or will Hector win out? It’s time to dive in and see for yourself!

With nonstop action amid a dangerous setting and mysterious circumstances, Maddy Mara’s Max Beast: Sharknado Warning introduces readers to an appealing young hero who embraces his new persona and uses his intelligence and wits, while staying true to his principles as he overcomes adversity and solves a mystery. Fast-paced plotting, compelling characters, high stakes, and gripping dialogue sprinkled with humor as well as exhilarating black-and-white illustrations by Khadigah Khatib make this a book that will thrill all readers. They will eagerly look forward to Max’s next adventure in Max Beast: Tiger Terror.

Just for Today (A Maybe Tomorrow Book)

As soon as Norris sees Elba, he can tell that she’s been up all night worrying. He offers to talk about it with her, but she declines. Norris tries another tack, telling Elba “‘sometimes worry is when you tell yourself the wrong story'” and suggesting that “‘just for today'” she tries telling herself “‘a different story.'” Elba is game to try. To start off, Norris decides on a happy ending to aim for then prompts a story with Elba’s help about two good friends who sail off on their boat.

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Ana Ramírez González. Text copyright © 2026 by Charlotte Agell. Courtesy of Scholastic.

Elba is excited to hear they have a boat, which inspires Norris to actually build a boat with wood and nails he has lying around. Elba helps, and soon they have the Adventure to float down the river to have a picnic. On shore, Norris unpacks their basket to find lots of goodies. . . but no Elba? Where could she be? Norris was “having too many thoughts. All those thoughts were turning into worries!”

Suddenly, Elba finds herself sailing off with the current and then, with a bump, she’s in the water. Realizing Norris can’t hear her cries for help, she finds her way to shore and clambers onto dry land. There, in front of her, is a raspberry thicket full of luscious fruit—her and Norris’s favorite! She nibbles a red raspberry while singing a comforting song to herself then sets off up the riverbank to find her friend. When she’s greeted by one of the butterflies that always hovers around Norris, Elba knows she is on the right path.

Norris, meanwhile, is full of worries that only grow as he tries not to worry. But then, he hears a voice he recognizes, and soon Elba appears. She’s surprised to learn that Norris was worried and that “everyone worries sometimes.” Elba pulls Norris along to see the raspberries she found, as they talk about how their worries actually helped them. They list the things they’ve lost as well as the things they haven’t and celebrate the raspberries they can have for lunch. They finish the story they were telling—short and sweet and all about their friendship—and it will always be their favorite.

Charlotte Agell’s Just for Today, the second book in her Maybe Tomorrow series brings best friends Elba and Norris back together to reassure young readers when they feel worried or overwhelmed. Through her gentle storytelling, Agell lets children know that they are not alone in experiencing the physical jitters and swirling thoughts that can feel paralyzing while giving them a concrete way to reframe the ideas in their mind. Her advice to concentrate on “just today” or simply a task at hand helps kids manage their emotions which fosters self-confidence. This lesson is clearly demonstrated through Elba and Norris’s close friendship, Elba’s uplifting internal dialogue, and the way Elba counters Norris’s regrets on losing their boat and food with positive aspects of the day.

Ana Ramírez González’s vibrant mixed-media illustrations engage readers with lovely landscapes and sweetly drawn depictions of Elba and Norris together. Norris and Elba’s changing emotions are evident and realistic, subtly moving between worry, fear, happiness, and contentment and giving children and adults a range of feelings to talk about.

Comforting and affirming, Just for Today is a balm for the worries and uncertainties of daily life and a book that children and adults will love to share.

The Mystery of the Lost Cape (The Terrible Trio #3)

Our intrepid friends Zeb the zebra, Marge the penguin, and Barry the lemur have settled into their roles as the most unlikely of superheroes as Zeb’s power is blending in with a crosswalk, Marge can make mac ‘n’ cheese from anything, and Barry has very nice handwriting. It’s tidying up day at their official lair—the Superheroes Café—and Zeb suggests sorting out the dress-up box. Only, it’s not a dress-up box, it’s the Lost-and-Found box, and Barry’s scandalized that Zeb and Marge want to play with other animals’ belongings.

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Minky Stapleton. Text copyright © 2026 by Swapna Haddow. Courtesy of Scholastic.

As Barry begins matching items with their possible owners, he finds a polka-dotted cape and just has to try it on. As soon as he ties it around his neck, he begins flying! Barry wants to try it out, but he’s conflicted. If he just borrows it, though, just to see what it’s like to be a real superhero, that would be okay, right? He dons a pair of goggles and soon he’s flying over the city. In no time he helps apprehend a wolf gang of bank robbers.

The “Masked Crusader” is all over the news, and Marge and Zeb can’t stop buzzing about him. They aren’t the only ones obsessed. Barry, himself, can’t seem to let go of his new alter-ego. He takes on just one more mission, then another and another and . . . When Barry finally comes back to the café, Zeb discovers the cape and remembers that Emu is offering a $50,000 reward for its return. He calls—only too late remembering that Emu has two superpowers—flying and butt kicking. Each of our intrepid heroes are afraid of getting their booty kicked, and they skirmish over who should hand over the cape and . . . Riiiiippp!

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Minky Stapleton. Text copyright © 2026 by Swapna Haddow. Courtesy of Scholastic.

After Zeb fails to fool Emu with a similar-looking tablecloth, Barry takes the rap. But before he gets his butt kicked, he tells Emu that he only used the cape to become a real superhero like her. Suddenly, Emu breaks down, admitting that she’s only a flying—and butt-kicking—superhero because of the cape. The three are surprised, reminding her that she “almost kicked Barry’s butt a moment ago” without wearing her cape and reassuring her that their butts were all terrified and are “still a bit frightened.” Emu takes their words to heart (and to her booty-kicking feet). She leaves happy and more confident than ever. The whole experience has given Barry a new idea—one that will make use of his true superpower, help their superhero community, and add another offering to the Superhero Café.

In this this third—and final—book in her The Terrible Trio series, Swapna Haddow follows up The Not So Superheroes and The Day the Mac ‘n’ Cheese Ran Out with the equally charming and hilarious The Mystery of the Lost Cape. Haddow’s signature silliness is magnified with clever misdirection and comical cluelessness, and Zeb’s retelling of how the cape got torn is laugh-out-loud funny. Layered with witty running-gag subplots and character arcs, the story pulls them all together in a heartening and satisfying ending.

Loaded with rollicking action and evocative facial expressions as well as favorite comedy and mystery tropes, Minky Stapleton’s incredibly detailed illustrations immerse readers in this world where laughter is their superpower. Stapleton exuberant interactions among these lovable characters will keep readers riveted to this fast-paced story. Her dynamic, easy-to-read text mimics the characters’ quirky dialogue, highlighting emotions through size and special effects.

A joy to read and a winning finish to this standout series, The Mystery of the Lost Cape: The Terrible Trio #3 is a must for graphic novel fan as well as for any library or home collection. This series would make a wonderful gift to start off summer reading or for any occasion.

June 12 – National Pet Appreciation Week

Pets give us so much love and joy that we often want to do something special for our furry friends in return. The first full week of June gives us the opportunity to show our pets how much we appreciate them! Why not spend a little extra time walking or cuddling with your pet? This week is a great time to pamper them with a few extra treat or a new toy. Another way to show how much our pets mean to us is to make sure they’re up-to-date on their annual check-ups and vaccinations. However you celebrate, you know your pet will appreciate it!

A Wickedly Evil Pet: A Branches Book (Super Villains in Training #2)

Vicky von Evil loves going to school at SVT—Super Villains in Training—even though the work may be harder for her than for most of the students. You see, her “parents and little brother, Henry, aren’t wicked at all.” Still, they support her because her “extended family is full of baddies!” In fact, her Granny Dina-mite has come for a visit to give Vicky some tips on becoming evil.

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Estrela Lourenço. Text copyright © 2026 by Kailei Pew. Courtesy of Scholastic.

One reason Vicky loves SVT is her teacher. Today, Miss Chiff announces that for the next week her students will be practicing on STV’s Crooked Course to learn new evil skills. On Friday each student will be graded on how well they show accuracy and speed in overcoming four obstacles. Those who finish within 30 minutes will be awarded a villain medal of chaos. Miss Chiff also says that they can bring a villain pet as a sidekick. Vicky wants to earn a medal, but without any special powers or a pet she knows it’s going to be tough.

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Estrela Lourenço. Text copyright © 2026 by Kailei Pew. Courtesy of Scholastic.

Granny takes Vicky to Purely Evil Pet Rescue. Vicky meets all the different animals, but none of them feel right for her. That is until she sees the very last pet—a bunny. Vicky feels an immediate spark and can see in his adorable eyes that he has “villain potential.” She names him Captain von Evil and can’t wait to show her class. Instead of being awed, though, the students just laugh.

When it comes time to practice on the Crooked Course, Vicky expects to show Captain the ropes, but as soon as they begin, Captain is way ahead of her. He swings! He tunnels! He jumps! He even scurries through the mud pit while Vicky gets hopelessly stuck. Everyone loves Captain and gives Vicky no notice. She feels deflated. How is her “new pet already a better villain” than she is?

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Estrela Lourenço. Text copyright © 2026 by Kailei Pew. Courtesy of Scholastic.

After more dismal results, Vicky is ready to take Captain back to the Pet Rescue. On the way there, however, she thinks about Granny’s advice to really watch what Captain is doing while they practice, and when her bike gets caught in a mud puddle and she sees Captain digging her out, she has a revelation. Now Vicky’s excited for Friday’s competition. But will her new strategy earn her a medal of chaos and prove that she is a true villain?

Illustration copyright © 2026 by Estrela Lourenço. Text copyright © 2026 by Kailei Pew. Courtesy of Scholastic.

Kailei Pew’s second book in her Super Villains in Training early chapter book series offers young readers fast-paced and hilarious action as Vicky tries to live up to her family’s talent for evil despite having no special powers and parents and a brother who are kind, always upbeat, and sweet. Pew’s story is delightfully relatable for readers navigating early elementary school grades, and her themes of friendship, family support, trusting others, self-confidence, and cooperation are smoothly woven throughout her appealing storytelling.

From the SVT campus to the pet shop to the obstacle course, young readers will love accompanying Vicky through Estrela Lourenço’s expressive and detailed illustrations. Lourenço brings out all of the humor in Pew’s story while also eliciting empathy from readers as Vicky struggles to prove herself. Emerging and newly independent readers will appreciate the bold text and dialogue enclosed in speech bubbles that are clearly linked to the speaker. Lourenço’s vivid snapshots and full-page images add to the depth of the Super Villains in Training series.

With a well-developed and enticing story, appealing characters, humor, and a high-interest setting, A Wickedly Evil Pet (Super Villains in Training #2) is a must for any fan of the series. Children new to the series will want to catch up with the first book: The Fantastic Freeze Ray before Project Slime, book #3 comes along in November.
