Tiger Terror (Max Beast #2)

Ever since Max’s parents left everything behind to embrace van life, Max has already gained a new perspective—literally! On his family’s last stop to explore a sunken yacht, Max tangled with another kid named Hector. He ended up with Hector’s magic amulet that gave him the power to turn into a great white shark and stop a group of criminals. Now, while taking a hike on a mountain path that passes a native animal sanctuary as well as billionaire Benson Leech’s ranch—where it’s reported he keeps illegal animals—Max spies Hector among the group. He knows that he needs to protect the amulet from Hector’s nefarious plans and heads off on his own.

The path Max takes leads him directly to a cave where he’s jumped by a tiger. As he’s trying to protect himself, Max feels the amulet “sinking into his skin” while the “amulet’s infinity symbol glowed out of his chest.” In moments, Max had transformed into a tiger! He was still becoming comfortable in his new stripy skin and wondering how he could protect his parents and the other hikers from the rogue tiger when a pack of wolves surrounded him. After a nip in the leg, Max chases the wolves away then finds the dead elk they had hunted.

When Max decides to take the elk to the tiger as a peace offering, he discovers that the tiger has two cubs to feed. Hungry himself, Max bounds away, soon discovering Benson Leech’s ranch and overhearing his plans to sell the tiger Lena’s, two cubs—even if it means shooting Lena to recapture them. Max is just formulating a plan to tell Lena when Hector appears, having followed him all along.

Only interested in making money, Hector betrays Max and Lena, and the four tigers are caged, awaiting the buyer who’s expected in only 30 minutes. Will Max be able to free them and escape to safety? Will Lena understand and trust him? And what about Hector—what choice will Max make when his adversary needs help? The surprise twists and heart-pounding action will keep readers flipping the pages until the compelling ending.

Max Beast: Sharknado Warning

As Max manned the boat while his parents explored the wreckage of a superyacht that recently sank, he suddenly found himself fighting for survival against a massive shark that charged their boat, sending Max into the churning sea. Just before he went under, though, Max caught a glimpse of an unusual marking on the shark’s belly. Where had he seen that image before? There was no time to think about that, however, as the massive beast was about to attack. Max braced himself. But instead of rushing at him, the shark began thrashing, and Max could see that the strange marking was an infinity symbol.

It began pulsing red then ripped itself from the shark’s chest. The silver pendant floated in the water for a moment, and Max realized he’d seen this charm around the neck of a teenager, Hector, who’d barged in front of him and his parents in the dive shop where they’d gotten their snorkeling equipment. Suddenly, it “flew through the water toward Max like a magnet to metal” and “sank into Max’s skin.” Then things really started to happen. As the shark began losing its fearsome features and sprouting arms, legs, and a shock of hair Max recognized as Hector’s, Max was undergoing the opposite transition. In a moment, he was longer, stronger, had hundreds of teeth, sharper vision, and a fin and tail.

This transformation changes everything, and even thought Max and Hector don’t like or trust each other, they’re linked—not only because they’re both trying to locate the superyacht (Hector to loot it, and Max to stop him and find his parents) but because they can read each other’s thoughts. This ability comes in handy as they battle Hector’s cohorts and their spearguns, a giant squid, a dive cage, and other explosive underwater menaces as well as time, itself. Will Max achieve his aims and become a boy again, or will Hector win out? It’s time to dive in and see for yourself!
